Self-advocacy should always be the first point of call
Nobody understands a situation better than the person who has experienced it for themselves. It's really important we find ways for people to share their experiences so they feel listened to, heard and valued.
A one-size-fits-all approach to engagement and communication inevitably excludes some people
It's important that we find ways to make our communication and engagement activities accessible. Some people may prefer communication to be shared in a different language, and some people may prefer a phone call to an online meeting.
We need to reach as many people in the community as possible
We need to widen our networks, and hear from those who may not normally contribute to our conversations, so we can gain a true understanding of who our communities are and what is affecting them.
We need to understand our audiences
When speaking and including people in our work, we need to adapt our communications and engagement activities to how people understand information, not necessarily how they communicate. For example, creating Easy Read guides.
People’s views should be sought to have a tangible impact on their lives.
We want to make a difference to people's lives. In order to to do this in a meaningful way, we need to ensure we continue to involve people in the work we do, and work together to make a positive impact.
