Jackie Prosser, who works for Bridgend Association of Voluntary Organisations (BAVO), coordinates a network of 165 community organisations that support vulnerable children and families.

Operating across Bridgend, these organisations help families access essential services, strengthen resilience, and build meaningful connections within their communities.

Through the NYTH/NEST self-assessment programme, Jackie has gained new insights into planning and partnership working – ensuring that the voices and needs of children and young people remain at the heart of everything she does.

The NYTH/NEST Framework - which stands for Nurturing, Empowering, Safe, and Trusted - is a Welsh Government initiative.

The framework promotes a trauma-informed, person-centred approach to developing mental health, wellbeing, and support services for children and families.

Organisations are being encouraged to use the NYTH/NEST self-assessment tool to reflect on their services and improve how they support babies, children, young people, and parents to access care and support tailored to their needs.

Jackie said:

“This programme has completely changed my perspective. It’s important to ensure every child’s voice is heard and placed at the centre of everything we do. From improving consultation to identifying gaps, working holistically, and connecting families with the right support, it’s about building a consistent, child-focused approach across our entire network.”

Following the process, Jackie has promoted awareness of the NYTH/NEST toolkit, and has an ambition to ensure all the organisations connected to her network undertake the training.

This improvement comes as BAVO, which represents 550 charities, community and voluntary groups across Bridgend, becomes the first County Voluntary Council in Wales to complete the NYTH/NEST self-assessment.

Organisations across Rhondda Cynon Taf, Bridgend, and Merthyr Tydfil are supported to complete their NYTH/NEST assessments through the Cwm Taf Morgannwg Regional Partnership, which promotes collaboration between health, social care, and third sector services.

Training, led by CTM’s Regional NYTH/NEST Coordinator, Stacy Chamberlain, involves interactive workshops, reflective exercises, and collaborative planning sessions designed to help organisations embed trauma-informed, person-centred principles into everyday practice.

To date, 13 organisations across the region have completed their NYTH/NEST self-assessment, with more expected to follow as the framework continues to roll out.

Stacy Chamberlain, Regional NYTH/NEST Coordinator, commented:

“I am delighted that, as a Cwm Taf Morgannwg region, we have committed to creating inclusive, responsive, and emotionally nurturing services for children and families. Our recently launched Whole System: Whole Heart children’s strategy reinforces the importance of working together as one connected system, and the NYTH/NEST Framework is a vital tool in achieving that. It was a pleasure to train Jackie and the team – BAVO’s dedication to collaboration and putting children’s needs first is truly inspiring.”

Mille Boswell, NYTH/NEST Implementation Lead at Welsh Government added:

“It is fantastic to see professionals like Jackie adopting the NYTH/NEST Framework into every day practice. The Framework is central to our vision for mental health and wellbeing services in Wales. It promotes a whole-system approach that is nurturing, empowering, safe, and trusted – ensuring that babies, children, young people, and their families receive the right support at the right time. By embedding these principles, we can create services that truly put children’s voices and needs at the heart of planning and delivery. At Welsh Government we recognise and value the progress the Cwm Taf Morgannwg region has made in raising the profile of the framework, and we are pleased to see it as an underpinning tool within their new Whole System: Whole Heart children’s strategy.”
